Date: 29 March2012
Venue: CSI Hall, Kaloor, Kochi.
About the Topic: BIG DATA
On 29th March 2012, Kochi Subsection organized a technical talk on the topic “BIG DATA”, in association with IETE and CSI.
The topic: The world is undergoing a major shift as the “where”, the “what” and the “why” of computing changes. This is having a profound effect on all aspects of computing. The volume of data that enterprises generate, consume, store, and access continues to increase exponentially. Everyday, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data–so much that 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. This data comes from everywhere: from sensors used to gather climate information, posts to social media sites, digital pictures and videos posted online, transaction records of online purchases, and from cell phone GPS signals to name a few. Big data is data that exceeds the processing capacity of conventional database systems. The data is too big, moves too fast, or doesn’t fit the strictures of your database architectures
The speaker, Mrs. Mini Ulanat , a faculty in the Post Graduate Department of Computer Science, CUSAT and active volunteer of IEEE, explained the various challenges involved in handling the “BIG DATA” and the various techniques and methods being evolved to handle such enormously large data. She gave an overview of various frameworks like Hadoop, Google Mapreduce etc. As the audience were much interested in knowing more about Hadoop, Mrs.Mini agreed to give a session on Hadoop during another tech talk event.
